A court in Saudi Arabia has sentenced the killer of Irish cameraman Simon Cumbers to death.

Adil Sa'ad Al-Dubayti Al Mutayri and two other defendants attended the short court hearing in Riyadh earlier today accused of the crimes of murder and declaring war against the state.

The sentence is subject to appeal.

Navan-born Mr Cumbers was shot while on assignment in Saudi Arabia for the BBC in 2004, filming an item about al-Qaeda.

The BBC correspondent who was with him - Frank Gardner - was also shot and seriously wounded.

Mr Cumbers, 36, had worked with a wide range of international broadcasters.

The Simon Cumbers Media Fund was established by Irish Aid in his memory.

Mr Cumbers's father Robert issued a statement on behalf of his family this evening.

He said: "I have mixed feelings about the sentencing.

"On the one hand, I am pleased that the murderer has had his fate decided and that the long wait is over.

"It won't bring Simon back, but it puts an end to the waiting.

"On the other hand, both Bronagh and I sympathise with Dubayti's parents, who must now suffer that tremendous loss that we feel."
