A 39-year-old man has been shot dead in Dublin.

The victim, who has been named as Christopher Zambra, was killed on Cooley Road in Drimnagh shortly before 3pm.

He was pronounced dead at the scene, which is preserved pending a technical and forensic examination.

Mr Zambra was well known to the gardaí for his involvement in organised crime and was a senior figure in a south Dublin drugs gang.

He was twice tried for a gangland murder in Dublin a number of years ago but acquitted by a jury.

Gardaí are appealing for witnesses.
