An investigation into the death of a 64-year-old Co Offaly man has been upgraded to murder.

The man, named as Thomas (Toddy) Dooley, sustained severe injuries to his head and upper body.

A post-mortem examination was carried out this evening.

Gardaí are not releasing the results for operational reasons, however they have confirmed they are treating Mr Dooley's death as murder.

Mr Dooley lived alone in Sister Senan Court, an elderly accommodation area near Edenderry Garda Station.

Local residents saw him out shopping and saw visitors calling to socialise with him in his home on a regular basis.

The alarm was raised when he was not seen by neighbours for some time and gardaí searched his home yesterday.

His body was discovered on a couch.

Gardaí have appealed to anyone who may have seen or spoken to Mr Dooley between 11am on Thursday 13 February and 2.45pm on Sunday 16 February to contact them.

They would also like anyone who may have witnessed any unusual or suspicious activity in the area of St Senan Court to contact Tullamore Garda Station at 057-9327607 or the Garda Confidential Line 1800 666 111.
