A Donegal-based garda who was found guilty of harassing two female colleagues and sexually assaulting one of them is to carry out 240 hours of community service and pay fines totalling €10,000.

Kevin Corby, 33, stood trial at Letterkenny Circuit Court last year.

He was convicted on three charges, and not guilty of five other charges of sexual assault. A sixth charge of sexual assault was withdrawn by the judge.

At his sentencing hearing in Letterkenny today, Judge John O'Hagan described Corby's actions as persistent and consistent and said he must have realised the impact his harassment was having on his two colleagues.

The judge said, however, that the probation report into Corby was positive and to ask the court for the "pound of flesh would be extreme".

He sentenced him to six months in prison but substituted that with 240 hours of community service and fined him €5,000 on each of the two harassment charges.

The court was told that Corby is currently suspended from the force and on 75% of his pay.

A separate internal inquiry will now be carried out.
