A criminal investigation has begun into the death of a retired Garda who died following an assault at the weekend.

A post mortem completed this evening revealed that he had received injuries before he died.

Seamus Marren, 57, was attacked at his home in Clonsilla in Dublin last Saturday.

He was discharged from hospital the next day following treatment.

However, he subsequently became ill and was returned to hosptial but died there two days ago.

Gardaí are following a particular line of inquiry in the investigation.

They have interviewed a number of people but no arrests have been made.

Mr Marren retired from the gardaí in 2011 after serving in a number of stations including the Bridewell and Cabra in Dublin where he was assigned to Áras an Uachtaráin.
