The ferry between Waterford Castle Island Resort and the mainland has started running again after a two-hour stoppage this evening.

The apparent dispute was between the ferry operator and the resort.

It is unclear what compromise has been reached.

More than a dozen gardaí are still at the scene.

Earlier, the dispute had left people stranded on an island in Waterford.

It is not known now many people were in Waterford Castle, the Golf Club and lodges all of which are situated on a private island in the Suir Estuary not far from Waterford city centre.

The operator of the ferry which runs between the island and the mainland decided to stop his service at around 8pm.

The hotel went into receivership a few months ago but is still operating and has guests tonight and was serving dinner.

Gardaí had been called but they said that the matter was a civil dispute.
