Gardaí have begun excavating the rear of a former detective garda's house in the search for the body of a murder victim.

Gerard Daly disappeared nearly two years ago.

A search underneath the patio at the home of John Kerins near Bailieborough in Co Cavan is under way, using heavy machinery.

Mr Kerins was murdered last year.

Two men were arrested today in the Bailieborough area of Co Cavan in connection with the murder.

The two men, who are in their 30s, are being questioned at Carrickmacross Garda Station, Co Monaghan.

Mr Kerins, 49, was found with gunshot wounds in his home in November 2012.

He had been a detective in the northeast and had also worked in the fraud squad in Dublin, before being medically discharged from the force in 2009.
