A murder investigation has been launched after a man was shot dead in Athy, Co Kildare last night.

Jamie Lindsay, 20, was shot as he walked along a lane near his home in the Coneyboro Estate at about 8.45pm.

He was taken to Naas General Hospital, where he was pronounced dead a short time later.

The area has been sealed off pending a forensic examination.

Gardaí are seeking information on a car believed to be the one that gunmen may have escaped in after the killing. 

A post mortem examination was carried out on the victim.

The scene remains sealed off pending the completion of the forensic examination.
