Two men are being questioned in connection with dissident republican activity after they were arrested carrying two handguns in Cork city yesterday afternoon.

A number of homes and business premises are being searched by gardai in a follow-up operation.

The two men were arrested at 4.10pm when detectives from Togher became suspicious of a van being driven by one of the men in the Dean Rock area of the suburb.

They stopped the van and searched it and found two handguns.

The men, one in his 30s and one in his 40s, were taken to Togher Garda Station.

They are being questioned about dissident republican activity and membership of the IRA.

The white van which the men were driving has been taken to a secure location and is being forensically examined, while the two handguns will also undergo ballistics testing.
