A 16-year-old boy who raped a then 15-year-old girl at a teenage house party in Dublin last year has been sentenced to six years detention with the final three years suspended.
The boy, who was 15 at the time of the offence and cannot be identified for legal reasons, pleaded guilty at the Central Criminal Court to raping the girl in a bedroom on 5 March, 2011.
He has no previous convictions.
Mr Justice Paul Carney said the offence was rape and the Children's Act could not prevent him imposing a custodial sentence.
However, he did note that both teenagers were very drunk at the time and that there was a lack of adult supervision.
