Man charged with murder of Catherine Gowing in Wales

Police in Wales have been authorised to charge a man with the murder of missing Co Offaly woman Catherine Gowing.

Clive Sharpe, 46, will appear at Mold Magistrates' Court tomorrow morning.

The District Crown Prosecutor for CPS North Wales, Karen Dixon, told a press conference that there was sufficient evidence to charge the suspect.

She added that it was vital that nothing be published in the media that would hamper the investigation.

Ms Dixon said: "The Crown Prosecution Service has been in close contact with North Wales Police as their investigation into Catherine Gowing's disappearance has developed.

"We can now confirm that, having carefully carried out a detailed review of the evidence gathered so far by North Wales Police, we have concluded that there is sufficient evidence to charge Clive Sharpe with the murder of Catherine Gowing and it is in the public interest to do so.

"Accordingly, we have authorised North Wales Police to charge the defendant and he will appear before Mold Magistrates' Court tomorrow morning.

"This is an extremely serious criminal charge and the police investigation continues.

"It is therefore vital that nothing is published that may hamper either the ongoing police enquiries or the defendant's right to a fair trial."

Earlier, investigating police confirmed that a burnt out Renault Clio car found in Pinfold Lane, Alltami, near Mold, belongs to Catherine Gowing.

The 37-year-old vet, who is originally from Clonlee in Co Offaly, has been missing from her home in North Wales since last Friday.

Police have drafted in specialist teams and underwater search teams to search a quarry pool.

A member of the public contacted police yesterday evening regarding the discovery in Pinfold Lane, Alltami, near Mold.

The vehicle was found approximately 3km from Catherine's home in New Brighton.

Det Supt John Hanson of North Wales Police said: "Catherine is still missing and her last known sighting is at 8.39pm on Friday, 12 October 2012 when she was seen on CCTV leaving Asda Supermarket in Queensferry."

Ms Gowing's sister Emma, who has travelled to Wales, described her as a kind, sensitive person who is passionate about animals and she appealed to local people to help find her.
