The Central Criminal Court has sentenced a 45-year-old man who raped his mother to 15 years in prison.
Mr Justice Barry White suspended the last two-and-a-half years of the sentence and back-dated the start of the term to July 2010, when the man was extradited from England.
He described it as one of the most horrendous rape cases he has encountered in his legal career.
He also ordered that the man be registered as a sex offender.
The court heard that the man has a previous conviction for the manslaughter of a woman in England.
At around 11pm on Mother's Day in March 2008, the man called around to his 65-year-old mother's house and raped her.
When he was arrested by gardaí, he admitted having had sex with his mother but said she was a willing participant.
After being charged and released on bail the man absconded to England.
A European Arrest Warrant was issued and he was brought back to Ireland in July 2010.
