Melbourne police have carried out two searches of the apartment where missing Irishwoman Jill Meagher lives with her husband.

Police described the initial search of the apartment as a routine part of the investigation into the Louth woman's disappearance.

In the first search, forensic police and homicide detectives spent a number of hours at the apartment and left with a number of large sealed bags.

ABC News reported that plain clothes police removed several more large brown bags in the second search.

The 29-year-old from Drogheda was last seen after a night out with work colleagues in the Brunswick area of Melbourne.

Police earlier said they had identified her on CCTV images from the early hours of Saturday.

They said the pictures show her walking home at 1.40am on Sydney Road in Brunswick.

They said they are still analysing the footage before releasing it to the public.

Detectives are also investigating whether her handbag, which was found in the area, was planted by someone involved in her disappearance.

A passerby found the handbag yesterday morning in an alley, not far from where Mrs Meagher was last seen.

It had not been found during an earlier police search.

Police Commissioner Ken Lay said it was possible that the bag may have been planted on the scene.

He said: "I am advised there was an extensive search on the weekend that [police] did not find that handbag. That handbag has turned up on the Monday.

"So, either police have missed that or someone has placed the bag back at that location."

Police are also investigating reports of previous assaults on women in the same area, which have been posted on the Facebook page set up to help find Mrs Meagher.
