Investigation into death of Sligo man after aggravated burglary

An investigation is being carried out into the death of a 67-year-old man who died following an aggravated burglary in Sligo.

Eugene Gillespie was found at his home on Old Market Street in the town on Friday night. It is understood his hands had been tied. 

He was taken to Sligo General Hospital where he died last night.

Mr Gillespie was a former Eircom employee and shopkeeper.

He was well known for his involvement in vintage car activities.

A post mortem is expected to be carried out at University College Hospital in Galway by Deputy State Pathologist Dr Michael Curtis.

Gardaí are appealing for anyone who noticed anything unusual or suspicious in the area between 9pm on Wednesday and 9pm on Friday to contact them.
