Gardaí are hunting an armed gang who robbed a post office in Navan earlier today.

Two men, wearing motorbike helmets, entered the post office at Black Castle just before 11am.

One of them was armed with a pistol, which he fired into the ceiling after being challenged about the authenticity of the weapon.

The men left the post office within two minutes taking several thousand euro in cash as well as a small amount of US Dollars and Sterling.

They left on a blue motorbike out the Slane road before transferring to a blue Audi A4, which had earlier been stolen in Drogheda.

The Audi was abandoned at Hayestown after crashing and the men escaped on foot.

Gardaí have appealed for the public's assistance.

It is understood the men were seen hanging around the Black Castle shopping centre for some time and one of them was wearing a distinctive yellow helmet.

The Audi had a taxi sign on its roof and its driver had been waiting on the Slane road for his two accomplices.

Anyone who saw any suspicious activity between 10am-11.30am is asked to come forward.
