Residents allowed to return to their homes in Belfast after police found no trace of a device or explosion

Police say the search could last several days

The search for a mortar device in west Belfast which led to around 100 homes and businesses being evacuated this morning has been called off.

A PSNI spokeswoman said that there was no trace of any device or explosion.

The search had followed reports that dissident republicans had mounted a gun and bomb attack on a police mobile patrol in the Glen Road last Friday.

A horizontally fired mortar bomb was reportedly used in last Friday's attack in which a shot was also fired at police.

The device apparently did not explode and was not found in searches carried out after the incident.

The evacuated homes were in the Glen Road, Shaws Road and Suffolk Road areas of west Belfast.

Community centres were opened to accommodate people moved out of their homes.
