A teenager has been found guilty of the manslaughter of a 73-year-old man almost two years ago at his home in Co Cavan.

Brendan McGovern, 19, from Carrigallen in Co Leitrim was found not guilty of the murder of John Golden, but guilty of manslaughter.

The teenager admitted to beating and kicking the pensioner who he claims sexually abused him six years ago.

The court was told today that Brendan Mc Govern has difficulties thinking through the consequences of his actions due to Borderline Intellectual Functioning.

John Golden from Nedd, Doogarry, Killeshandra in Co Cavan was found lying unconscious under his bed in September 2010.

He had sustained severe injuries to his lower body.

Mr Golden was taken to hospital but never recovered and died a month later.

Gardaí began a murder investigation and interviewed Brendan Mc Govern, who lived not too far from Mr Golden's home.

Mc Govern claimed that the pensioner had sexually abused him as a boy and that when he went to his house that night to confront him he "lost control."

He admitted kicking and beating him and the court heard Mr Golden's blood was found on the teenager's shoe.

Today the court heard evidence from a clinical psychologist who described Brendan Mc Govern as "a very anxious young man."

The clinical psychologist said McGovern had difficulties with verbal communication, problem solving, attention and concentration.

She added that he had Borderline Intellectual Functioning, the sufferers of which have difficulty thinking through their actions.

The court also heard the statements of two other young men who described John Golden as a bit queer.

They said they, as children, had been invited to Mr Golden's home and thought they were going to look at cars but were instead shown pornography.

One said Mr Golden put his hand on his leg and asked him what did he think about that.

Brendan Mc Govern was released on continuing bail and will be sentenced in October.
