Armed robbery at Ulster Bank branch in Down

The PSNI is investigating an armed robbery at an Ulster Bank branch in Castlewellan in Co Down.

A man armed with a gun entered the Ulster Bank in the Upper Square area of the town just before 11am.

He threatened staff before making off with a cash box.

The PSNI has appealed for any witnesses to come forward.

SDLP Down District Councillor Eamonn O'Neill has condemned the robbery.

Mr O’Neill said: "The use of weapons is particularly worrying and will have made for an intensely frightening experience for any witnesses."

He added that this was a "vicious and reprehensible act", especially given the crisis that Ulster Bank customers have been facing.
