John Gallagher has been released from the Central Mental Hospital this evening following a decision by the Mental Health Review Board.

The board has been assessing the case, since Gallagher handed himself in to the hospital in May.

Gallagher killed mother and daughter Anne and Annie Gillespie in the grounds of Sligo Hospital in 1988 when they were visiting a relative.

Gallagher was found guilty but insane at his trial in 1989.

He was sent to the Central Mental Hospital in Dublin. In 2000, he was on an outing from the hospital and fled to England.

It is understood that Gallagher was released from the Central Mental Hospital at 5pm this evening.

The Gillespie family have been made aware of his release.

It is understood that Mr Gallagher can visit Lifford, but certain restrictions will apply.
