Man arrested after four held hostage in Cashel

A man has been arrested after holding four people hostage for two hours at a shop in Co Tipperary.

The man, aged in his 20s, went into a pharmacy in Ladyswell in Cashel at 10.15am, armed with what was believed to be a handgun.

He threatened the four members of staff and held them hostage in the shop.

Gardaí from Thurles, Cashel and Clonmel along with the Regional Response Unit were called to the scene.

At 12.15pm the man came out of the shop and officers used a taser gun to subdue him.

He was taken to Cahir Garda Station for questioning.

The four staff members are said to be in shock following the incident.

It has since emerged the suspect was carrying an imitation firearm.
