Dublin man jailed for five years for killing best friend

The family of a man who was kicked to death in a house in Ayrfield in Dublin in 2008 say they are disgusted by the sentence his killer received.

Paul Rice, of Clanhugh Road, Donnycarney, was jailed for five years at the Dublin Circuit Criminal Court today for the manslaughter of Keith Mills in December 2008.

The 26-year-old said he "just snapped" and attacked his best friend after he hit his sister with a belt.

Mr Mills's parents said afterwards they had not received justice.

The 22-year-old father-of-one died in hospital ten days after he was attacked by Rice.

The two had been drinking for at least two days and were in a house at Ayrfield on 22 December 2008.

They were drinking along with a number of others when Mr Mills hit Rice's sister with a belt and Rice, as he put it, "just snapped."

He attacked his friend, kicked him several times in the head, causing him severe brain injuries and fracturing his skull.

He died in hospital on New Year's Day 2009.

He expressed remorse for killing Mr Mills and today he was sentenced to seven years in prison with the final two years suspended.

Rice has a total of 22 previous convictions in the Republic and in Northern Ireland for assault, damaging property and possession of knives.

He was arrested and admitted what he had done. Upon release, he went to Belfast to his father but was imprisoned there and subsequently returned to Ireland on a European Arrest Warrant.
