A man has been questioned following the seizure of 5.3 million cigarettes found concealed in a shipment of industrial paper reels at Dublin Port.

The cigarettes, with a street value of around €2m, were found during routine screening in a container that arrived from Rotterdam.

A UK registered commercial vehicle and trailer was seized by customs officers and the driver was interviewed.

The ''Raquel'', ''Pride'', ''Jim'' and ''Capital'' brand cigarettes represent a potential loss to the Exchequer of around €1.8m.

Around 55.7m cigarettes have been seized by Revenue's Customs Service so far this year, with a total estimated retail value of €24m.
