Double killer who escaped from Central Mental Hospital 12 years ago hands himself in

A man who killed two and has been on the run for 12 years has handed himself in to the Central Mental Hospital.

John Gallagher from Donegal killed mother and daughter Anne and Annie Gillespie in the grounds of Sligo Hospital in 1988 when they were visiting a relative.

Gallagher was found guilty but insane at his trial in 1989 and was sent to the Central Mental Hospital in Dublin.

In 2000, he was on an outing from the hospital and fled to England.

John Gallagher was located in Oxford, but he could not be extradited.

British police could not arrest him as he had not committed a crime in Britain.

He was assessed by a psychiatrist who declared him sane and he was allowed to walk away a free man.

In 2003 he moved to Strabane, Co Tyrone, just a few miles from where his victims lived in the twin towns of Ballybofey and Stranorlar in Co Donegal.

Gallagher, handed himself in to the Central Mental Hospital yesterday.

Under the Criminal Law Insanity Act 2006 his continued detention as a patient is a matter to be determined by the Criminal Law Mental Health Review Board.
