Limerick man wanted for threatening witness arrested in Bulgaria

A Limerick man, who has been on the run for more than a year and a half, has been arrested in an apartment in Bulgaria on foot of a European arrest warrant.

The 33-year-old was arrested by Bulgarian police along with his brother in the coastal resort of Sunny Beach.

A number of handguns, as well as a quantity of drugs and cash, were also discovered in the apartment.

The man, who is thought to be a senior figure in one of Limerick's two feuding gangs, is to face extradition back to Ireland to face charges for threatening to kill a witness in a court case.

The witness and his family were subsequently given 24-hour Garda protection because of the threats.

The man, who is 33, left Ireland in June of 2010, and gardaí traced him to Manchester in the UK, but he left there before he could be arrested.

He was also found in Prague, but left there and went to Bulgaria, where he was finally arrested today.

The Director of Public Prosecutions had directed he be charged after gardaí had sent a file on the case to her.
