A body has been recovered during the search for a 43-year-old fisherman missing off the Galway coast.

The body was found near Mace Head, close to the shoreline of St Macdara’s island, which lies a short distance from the mainland near Carna.

The man has been named locally as Gerry Folan or Gearoid O'Cualáin, who was a native of Carna.

An empty currach was discovered at 6am north of Inis Mór, the largest of the Aran Islands.

The fisherman was last seen rowing a currach in the Mace Head region at about 5pm yesterday.

Valencia Coast Guard, who co-ordinated the operation, was alerted just before 11pm last night.

The body was discovered just before midday and was taken to University College Hospital Galway for a post mortem examination.

The currach was taken to Salthill Garda Station where it is being examined.
