A district court judge in Co Kerry has had a case for failing to display a valid NCT disc on his car dismissed after the court heard he had no previous convictions and the matter was put in order "immediately".

Judge James O'Connor of Coolroe, Glenbeigh, whose court district covers much of Co Kerry, was ordered to pay €250 to the court poor box.

The money will go to the local branch of the St Vincent de Paul Society.

Judge O’Connor wasn't present when his case was called at the district court in Cahersiveen.

The case arose after a garda observed that Judge O’Connor’s 2004-registered car didn’t have an NCT disc displayed when it was parked in Cahersiveen during the monthly court sitting over which he was presiding last July.

The court was told that the car was immediately tested for its NCT cert and passed.

Defence for Judge O’Connor said a matter like this would usually be dealt with by the court by way of a contribution to the court poor box and presiding Judge Patrick Clyne said this would be acceptable.
