A man has been charged with the manslaughter of his mother at a nursing home in Co Waterford earlier this week.
Gerard Vollrath, 45, was brought before a special sitting of Waterford District Court tonight.
Mr Vollrath, who has an address at Tramore, was remanded on bail.
Judge David Kennedy heard Mr Vollrath said no comment when charged with the unlawful killing or manslaughter of his mother.
Vera Vollrath, 83, was found dead in her room yesterday morning by staff at Killure Bridge Nursing Home, where she was a resident.
A post mortem examination took place last night and this morning gardaí confirmed that an investigation had been launched.
Mr Vollrath was arrested yesterday at Dublin Airport and was questioned in Waterford throughout the day.
He has handed over his passport to gardaí and is to sign on daily with gardaí between 9am and 9pm. He is due back in court next Tuesday.
A number of family members were in court for the brief hearing.
The management at Killure Bridge nursing home have issued a statement regarding the death.
They say that management, staff and residents of Killure Bridge Nursing Home are deeply saddened by the passing of their friend.
They say Vera was a much-loved resident, friend and companion and was part of the nursing home community since May 2010.
Management say they are co-operating fully with State authorities as they carry out their investigations into Ms Vollrath's death.
They are also providing residents and staff with comfort and support during what they call 'this very difficult and upsetting time'.
