A man has been arrested in Belfast after he was allegedly caught with a shotgun in a shopping centre this afternoon.

The 22-year-old was taken into custody at the Castle Court centre at around 2.30pm.

The suspect is being detained at the PSNI’s custody suite at Musgrave Street in the city after a weapon was recovered from the Debenhams department store in Castle Court.

It is understood officers drew Tasers during the arrest operation but they were not discharged.

In a statement, Debenhams confirmed that a man had been arrested at its store in Royal Avenue.

"We take the safety of our employees and customers extremely seriously and the authorities were called as soon as our security staff became suspicious," a Debenhams spokesperson said.
