A 27-year-old man has pleaded guilty to the manslaughter of a father-of-two in Dublin two years ago.

Robert Egan said he accidently shot Wayne Doherty when he tried to wrestle a loaded sawn-off shotgun off him on the night of 4 July 2009 at Oakview Way in Hartstown.

Mr Egan said he had brought the gun with him with the intention of shooting Mr Doherty's friend in the legs following a row at a christening party earlier that day.

The Central Criminal Court heard that the victim had links with the IRA and Mr Egan's brother, a shopkeeper with no links to criminality, was later shot dead by the IRA in retaliation for Mr Doherty's murder.

Mr Doherty's widow Karen and his sister Sandra gave victim impact statements to the court on the devastating effect the killing of the 32-year-old has had on their families.

Mr Egan obtained a false passport and birth certificate and fled to Turkey after the shooting. He returned after ten months and admitted what he had done and pleaded guilty to manslaughter.

Mr Justice Pat McCarthy said he would consider his verdict and pass sentence on Thursday.
