Connolly Hospital Blanchardstown in Dublin is to get an MRI scanner at a cost of around €1m.
The equipment is due to be bought before the end of the year.
It is the only major teaching hospital in Dublin that does not have an MRI scanner and up to now it had to refer patients to other public and private facilities for scans.
Minister for Transport Leo Varadkar said he had recently raised the issue with the Chief Executive of the HSE and the Minister for Health Dr James Reilly.
He said the HSE had confirmed today the scanner will be bought.
