Fourteen people have been arrested as part of an investigation into organised crime and drug trafficking.

Gardaí, assisted by customs officers, carried out searches at 27 locations in Leinster and Munster this morning.

They included homes and businesses in counties Carlow, Meath, Offaly, Laois, Tipperary and Waterford.

A large consignment of contraband cigarettes was found during one of the searches.

Twelve men and two women, aged between 18 and 54, are being detained at a number of garda stations.
