Ms Roberts was speaking after 34-year-old Timothy O'Driscoll, of St Rita's Avenue, in Gurranabraher, was sentenced to life imprisonment by Mr Justice Paul Carney for the murder of her 25-year-old son Lee McCarthy.

O'Driscoll had denied murdering Mr McCarthy, claiming to gardaí that the deceased had broken into his home and he had found him in his mother's room.

However, another witness, Stephen Monaghan told the court that he, the deceased and O'Driscoll had spent the night together drinking and that a row had broken out between the two men.

Speaking after a jury of six men and six women found him guilty of the murder of her son, Ms Roberts said she, her son Daniel and Lee's sister, Denise, who couldn't be present in court, were "absolutely ecstatic" about the result.

Daniel Roberts said the family wanted to thank everyboy for their hard work and dedication, especially Sergeant Pat Lyons. He said justice was done.
