A 21-year-old man has appeared in court in Limerick charged in connection with a sexual assault on a 62-year-old woman in Co Cork last weekend.
Liam Smith of Batt Donegan Place, Charleville, Co Cork is charged with sexually assaulting the woman in Charleville on Sunday.
The assault is alleged to have happened as the woman returned home from bingo.
Mr Smith was arrested at his home yesterday morning and formally charged at Mallow Garda Station last night. He made no reply when charged.
Gardaí objected to bail on the grounds of the seriousness of the charge and the possibility of further charges being brought against the accused man.
The court heard he has been living with his family in Charleville and is working as a metal fabricator.
Judge Mary O'Halloran refused bail and remanded him in custody to Limerick Prison to appear in court on 29 September.
She reserved the question of granting free legal aid when she heard that the accused man was earning €400 a week, prior to his arrest, and that he had savings.
