The PSNI has launched an investigation following a shooting incident in the Markets area of south Belfast last night.
Police said a 20-year-old man had sustained gunshot wounds to the lower legs.
Police attending the scene came under attack from fireworks.
One officer was injured but did not require hospital treatment.
