Four people were rescued tonight after their yacht went aground on rocks near Allihies in West Cork.

The four - two men and two teenage boys - had left Allihies Pier in their small open sailing boat this afternoon.

The boat was driven onto the rocks shortly after 7pm.

Three of the crew were rescued by the Derrynane Inshore Lifeboat; the fourth was airlifted from the rocks by the Shannon-based Coast Guard helicopter.

A spokesman for the Coast Guard service said three of the crew had suffered no injuries and were able to return home. The fourth is being medically assessed at Castletownbere.
