The report of an independent lawyer into the deaths of three Irish peacekeepers in Lebanon 22 years ago has been sent to the Minister for Justice, Equality & Defence, Alan Shatter.

The report by Senior Counsel Frank Callinan has been conducted over the past four months.

Mr Callanan was asked by Minister Shatter in April to examine relevant matters surrounding the deaths of Corporal Fintan Heneghan, Private Mannix Armstrong and Private Thomas Walsh in Lebanon in March 1989 when a landmine exploded beside their truck.

Mr Callanan was asked in to review all relevant documents and interview appropriate people after Mr Shatter said new information had come to light in the course of preparing the State's defence against a legal case.

The families of the dead men have claimed the men were sent into the path of the roadside bomb without proper consideration of the threat or the protection of routine anti-landmine safety measures.

In June, the widow and family of Private Armstrong won €300,000 in settlement of her High Court action against the State. The settlement was made without admission of liability.

This evening, the Department of Defence said it would not be appropriate for them to comment until Mr Shatter has had a chance to review the report and consider what further action is required.

The minister plans to meet the families of the three soldiers before he makes any public comment.

It has not yet been decided if the report will be published.
