A 28-year-old man has been jailed for life for the murder of a drug dealer in Dublin two years ago.

Peter Kenny from Rialto in Dublin has been found guilty of the murder of John Carroll who was shot dead in a pub in The Coombe in February 2009.

Two other accused - Damien Johnston from Crumlin and Bernard Hempenstall from The Coombe - were found not guilty.

The jury could not agree on a verdict on a fourth man and the Director of Public Prosecutions will decide if he is to face a retrial.

On the night he was shot dead, John Carroll had with him a tick list of drug debtors and creditors who owed him €243,000.

The 33-year-old father was shot dead by a heavily disguised gunman who arrived at Grumpy Jack's pub, chased him and shot him several times.

Today the jury found that Peter Kenny was the hitman.

The prosecution alleged that Christopher Zambra was the brains behind it and had his finger on the pulse of this operation before, during and afterwards. However, the jury could not agree on that and the DPP will now have to decide if the 25-year-old is to face a retrial.

Mr Justice Barry White sentenced Peter Kenny to life in prison and refused leave to appeal.

He also said that while he had strong views on this case, he did not propose to express them until the DPP decided whether Christopher Zambra is to be retried.
