Two sentenced over sectarian attack

Two men have been sentenced to three years of detention for an unprovoked sectarian attack on a man in Belfast.

John Lavery was attacked because he was wearing a Glasgow Celtic football shirt.

The judge said 20-year-old Philip Donald and Craig Kennedy, aged 18, had carried out a disgraceful attack on a drunk and defenceless man, which had sectarian overtones.

The court heard that during the five-minute assault, which was captured on CCTV, one of the attackers called their victim a 'fenian b******'.

While the victim was on the ground, he was kicked, punched and stamped on before being robbed of cash and his mobile phone.

Defence lawyers for the accused said the pair conceded the attack had been brutal, sustained and harrowing, but had been out of character for them.
