The Minister for Justice has confirmed that the wages of judges currently sitting will be cut should the proposed referendum on the issue succeed.

Speaking at the first formal citizenship ceremony in Dublin Castle, Alan Shatter said there was no confusion surrounding the issue.

The referendum would allow the Government apply the pay decreases for senior civil servants to the salaries of sitting judges.

He said: 'The referendum to take place will allow the Government to apply the public sector wage decreases that have occurred to members of the judiciary.

'It will apply prospectively from the date the referendum is passed.'
