Six men have been arrested in connection with the seizure of two consignments of stolen alcohol.

The six were detained near Drogheda in Co Louth and in Delvin in Co Westmeath.

Gardaí say the arrests were made as part of an investigation into dissident republicans.

Three men from Northern Ireland were arrested at around 11pm last night after an articulated truck was stopped on the M1 near Drogheda.

The truck was stolen and contained an assignment of alcohol. A second trailer, also containing alcohol, was seized.

The men, who are in their 30s, are being held at Balbriggan and Drogheda garda stations.

Three more men were arrested in a follow-up operation in Delvin.

They are being questioned at Kells and Navan garda stations.
