A murder investigation has been launched after the discovery of a man's body in a barrel in Co Clare.

The man, who was in his 20s, was found dead in Cappaghbeg, about 8km from Ennis, shortly after 7am.

The body of 21-year-old Eoin Ryan was discovered in a barrel and a cement block was found about 500 metres away.

Gardaí described the attack as an 'extremely violent assault' and post mortem results have revealed that Mr Ryan died from head injuries.

A man in his 30s was arrested in the area a short time after the body was found.. He was arrested following a phone call to gardaí by a member of the public.

Both the victim and the suspect are from the local area.

A taxi driver has also since come forward with information following an appeal by gardaí.

He confirmed that he took a fare from two men in the early hours of this morning travelling from Ennis town centre to Cappaghbeg.

Gardaí say this was a vital piece of information in the ongoing murder investigation.

The scene has been sealed off for a technical examination.
