A woman is being treated in hospital in Mayo after she was injured in a shooting yesterday evening.
The attack took place in a shop where the woman was working in the village of Balla.
A man in his 40s has been arrested for questioning in connection with the incident.
He was arrested in Mayo two hours after the shooting and is being held at Castlebar Garda Station.
Gardaí say they are still trying to establish a motive for the shooting.
They have set up an incident room at Castlebar and are appealing to witnesses to contact them there.
The gunman walked into the supermarket on the village's main street and shot the woman at close range.
He then fled from the scene and abandoned the shotgun used in the attack.
The woman, who is believed to be in her 50s, was taken to Mayo General Hospital in Castlebar.
She is said to have 'serious' but not life-threatening injuries.
