A 42-year old man has appeared in court in Limerick in connection with a major drugs and firearms seizure on the city last Saturday.
John Ryan, of Airfield Terrace on St Patricks Road in Limerick, is charged with possession of a pistol and assorted ammunition under the firearms act, and with possession of assorted drugs at an apartment at Belfield House on the Ennis road in Limerick.
He was granted free legal aid and remanded in custody to appear in court next Thursday, when a bail application will be made.
Gardaí told the court they will be opposing any bail application.
The man was arrested as part of a planned operation by gardaí backed up by the Regional Armed Support Units at an apartment on the Ennis Road in Limerick city.
5kg of heroin, along with 3kg of cannabis herb and a quantity of cocaine and ecstasy tablets were seized. Two firearms and a quantity of ammunition were also seized by gardaí.
The drugs haul has now been forensically examined and gardaí estimate it to be worth around €1.2m. It had initially been given a value of €700,000.
