A 22-year-old man has been arrested in Cork city centre in connection with a fire that killed a 25-year-old woman and her five-year-old nephew in Mahon, Cork.

The man has been arrested on suspicion of arson.

Helena O'Dwyer and her nephew Ryan O'Dwyer were among eight people in the house on Nutley Avenue in Mahon when the fire broke out shortly after 3am this morning.

Neighbours made frantic efforts to rescue them before two units of Cork City Fire Service arrived on the scene and brought the blaze under control.

Six people were taken from the house suffering from smoke inhalation and taken to Cork University and the Mercy University Hospitals.

Helena, a mother of one, and Ryan were also taken from the house, but efforts to resuscitate them were unsuccessful and they were later pronounced dead.

A garda technical team examined the scene this morning.
