Northern Ireland Secretary of State Owen Paterson has condemned an attack on an SDLP election candidate in Co Armagh.

Outgoing SDLP MLA Dolores Kelly sustained injuries to her hand after rocks were thrown at her car at a railway crossing in Lurgan.

Ms Kelly was left badly shaken by the attack, and said she believed her car had been deliberately targeted.

The former Northern Ireland Policing Board member has been threatened in the past because of her work with the PSNI.

Mr Paterson described the incident as 'despicable and cowardly' and said such incidents would not halt the political progress being made in Northern Ireland.

The attack on Ms Kelly comes after canvassers for her party colleague, Patsy McGlone, discovered a petrol bomb under their car in Coagh, Co Tyrone, on Thursday night.

No-one was injured. Two teenagers were arrested in connection with the incident.
