A former garda has been found guilty of causing loss by deception and corruption, to an insurance company.
John Joe Synnott of Camblin, New Ross, was found guilty at Wexford Circuit Criminal Court this afternoon by a jury of six men and six women after three hours deliberation.
The former Wexford town garda with 32 years experience was charged with causing loss by deception and corruption in office arising out of an alleged road traffic accident at Newtown Road, Wexford in September 2007.
He was also convicted of knowingly, as an agent, using a document containing a false statement.
It was alleged that Mr Synnott aided and abetted a number of people in defrauding the AXA insurance company and that he produced a traffic accident report for an accident that never happened.
There were emotional scenes in the courtroom today when the verdict was read out. Judge Alice Doyle adjourned the case for sentencing to 22 June.
During the case it emerged that friends of the defendant received €23,000 from AXA after falsely reporting an accident in the outskirts of Wexford town in 2007.
