A 20-year-old man has been found guilty of the murder of Arklow shopkeeper John Deasy in November 2009.

Anthony Farrell from Marian Villas in Arklow had admitted the stabbing, but his lawyers had claimed he did not intend to murder Mr Deasy.

The jury of nine men and three women deliberated for just under four hours before bringing in a unanimous verdict.

Victim impact statements will be heard on 20 May when Farrell will receive the mandatory life sentence for murder and will also be sentenced for robbery.

The 44-year-old died from a stab wound to the chest after confronting Farrell, who was carrying out a robbery at Brauders newsagents in Arklow.

Farrell told gardaí it was an accident and he had never meant for any of it to happen.
