The Editor of the Irish Times, Geraldine Kennedy, has announced her retirement as editor of the newspaper.

It is understood that Ms Kennedy announced at the paper's news conference that her current contract will expire in September when she turns 60.

She told colleagues at the conference that she has not sought an extension to her contract and will be retiring as editor.

However, she will remain in-situ until a successor is appointed.

It is not known how long that process will take.
