The Defence Forces have confirmed that a suspect device recovered in north county Dublin this morning was a live explosive.

The Defence Forces received a request for assistance from the gardaí at about 1.30am, when the device was discovered underneath a car opposite a nightclub at Airside Retail Park in Swords.

Members of the Explosives Ordinance Disposal unit arrived at the scene at 3.15am and the device was made safe by a controlled explosion.

The area was declared safe at 4.45am.

The device was then moved to a military compound for further tests.

Gardaí in Swords have appealed for any witnesses to come forward.
