Rain and sleet showers will affect parts of the west and north at first tonight, before the showers spread eastwards overnight. As the rain and sleet pushes eastwards it will fall as snow on higher ground in the west but may fall at lower levels in parts of the midlands and the east. There will be icy conditions overnight with patches of freezing fog developing as temperatures fall to between 0 and -6 degrees.
A frosty and icy start to Saturday with patches of freezing fog lingering in particular in the midlands. There will be further rain and sleet showers over the south of the country, with some snow falling inland and on higher ground. The weather will be brighter and drier in northern areas and this weather will gradually spread to all areas during the afternoon, although further showers are likely along the north coast. Another cold day with highs of 1 to 4 degrees.
2230 The latest situation with Dublin Bus sees disruption to services continuing.
2228 AA Roadwatch update: CLARE: Black ice on N67 Lisdoonvarna/Ballyvaughan especially at Cork Screw Hill. A number of cars have gone off the road here.

1739 eircom has said that 'The continued severe weather conditions are impacting heavily on the eircom network. There are currently over 3,800 reported faults, with more than 1,000 faults reported today. Both broadband and telephone services are impacted. 600 eircom crews continue to work nationwide to reach customers without service.'

1717 Bord Gáis Networks has reminded customers to ensure their fuel burning appliances are functioning normally to avoid a build-up of carbon monoxide. No matter how cold it is, DO NOT block vents. Without working vents, there can be a build-up of carbon monoxide in your home which can be potentially fatal.
1712 Snow depth on McGillicuddy's Reeks was about 20cm earlier today. Kerry Mountain Rescue Team says avalanche is a possibility in the mountains in the event of consistently heavy snowfall.

1656 Wicklow Water Update: The Aughrim & Rathdangan water supply will be turned off from 8pm tonight until 8am tomorrow morning. Arklow Town Council will be turning off the water supply tonight from 9.30pm until 7am tomorrow morning.
1655 Wicklow County Council is continuing to treat most of the regional road network and some local roads as resources permit.
They are also continuing their efforts to clear footpaths in the Town Council areas as resources permit.
Citizens are asked to clear snow from outside homes and business premises and to assist their neighbours where possible.
All recycling centres in the County remain closed until further notice.
1644 Bus Éireann says most services are operating with some delays and diversions in areas affected by the severe weather.
It says ‘disruption to services in the northwest, southwest and Cork earlier today has now abated although there are delays on some suburban and rural services in Cork. The Dublin Airport-Rosslare service that was cancelled earlier in the day is now operating.’

1634 And now for the weather… Scattered rain and hail showers this evening mainly in western and northern areas.
Frosty and icy conditions overnight with some freezing fog developing in places also.
Showery rain and sleet will develop in parts of west Munster and Connacht and will spread eastwards overnight.
In the west, snowfall will be on higher ground but could fall at lower levels in parts of the midlands and east.
Much of Ulster will be dry but there will be some wintry showers in northern and western parts. Lowest temperatures of 0 to -6C.
1628 All main roads in Waterford are said to be passable, however, motorists should still proceed with extreme caution as patches of black ice remain in some areas.

1405 The National Roads Authority has instructed local authorities to mix salt with sand so that supplies can be maintained.
NRA spokesman Sean O'Neill said the 50/50 sand salt mixture was for 'insurance'. He said it was to make sure that the national road network remained open.
The authority has 30,000 of salt left and is expecting to get more deliveries to bring it up to 50,000 tonnes by Christmas.
It is using approximately 3,500 tonnes a day. Some local authorities are using up to five times their normal amount.

1250 AA Roadwatch has said that the Kinnitty/Mountrath (R440) Rd remains closed in Offaly. There has been recent snowfall in the county.
1246 Ray Kennedy, RTÉ's reporter at Dublin Airport, says the airport is operating as normal; however there are significant delays to flights into the UK and central europe as a result of weather conditions there.
Dublin Airport Authority said while the airport is fully operational passengers should monitor airline websites for further announcements throughout the day.
The DAA also said it is closely monitoring weather radar following predictions of more snow on the east coast throughout the afternoon.
1243 Roads are still tricky due to the weather in Cork. Here are some updates from AA Roadwatch:
-West Cork roads remain hazardous around Bandon, Skibbereen, Macroom and Bantry.

1155 Eircom said it has 600 crews working to restore services across the country. The company said it has repaired 5,000 faults since Monday.

1154 Well that didn't last long, with news that the Kenmare Historic Stages Rally has been postponed. This is the first time in the 33-year history of the Killarney & District Motor Club, that they have had to cancel a rally.
A new date will be set as soon as possible.
1151 Some good news for a change as RTÉ's Paschal Sheehy reports that conditions across Cork city and county have improved considerably within the last hour.
The ice which had made driving conditions hazardous earlier this morning has melted in many places, but as always motorists are urged to drive with care.
The overpass at the Kinsale Road roundabout and the South Ring road in Cork have both reopened and traffic is moving freely again. However, Cork Institute of Technology is closed today.
1134 Dublin Bus were on to say that only two routes have been cancelled - the 185 between Bray Railway Station and Enniskerry, and the 53/a from Eden Quay to North Wall.
1131 Irish Rail has just said via its Twitter account that it has the 'points cleared in Heuston (and that's a lot of points!) - service delays easing as a result'. Good news!
1128 The Irish Taxation Institute has postponed all lectures and workshops due to take place this weekend, in Dublin, Limerick, Cork and Athlone.

1110 The Irish Red Cross is assisting the HSE to reach and transport patients from homes and hospitals otherwise cut off by the snow.
Special Irish Red Cross 4x4 ambulances and other vehicles are active in Cork, Laois, Offaly and Carlow, and crews are on standby in 11 other counties.
1105 The Kinnitty to Mountrath road in Co Offaly remains closed.
Offaly County Council has asked people to conserve water during the cold snap.

1035 Gardaí have closed the overpass at the Kinsale Road roundabout in Cork city leading to major traffic disruption on the South Ring Road, the main traffic artery on the city's south side.
It began raining in Cork at around 9am and that rain is turning to ice once it hits the ground. There has been dozens of accidents in the city and county.
Reports that road conditions are very bad in Mallow, Middleton, Cobh, Bandon, and Kinsale.

Sleet and snow will continue to move eastwards across the country this morning, with further significant snow accumulations. Snow clearing the east coast this afternoon and scattered showers of rain and sleet developing in the west and northwest. Very frosty with icy conditions too, with high of just -1 to 3 degrees generally, but up to 5 or 6 along west and southwest coasts.

0900 Update from RTÉ News's Midlands Correspondent Ciaran Mullooly:
Black ice has been the most serious issue facing motorists in the Midlands this morning.
Roads in Mullingar and Athlone are particularly bad and there have been a number of minor collisions on the M4 Galway to Dublin road near Moate.
Bus Éireann say all services are running except the Waterford to Athlone service which is stopping in Laois because of treacherous conditions on hills in the Windy Gap near Stradbally.
The snow has now started to fall in Longford, Westmeath and parts of Offaly and gardaí say driving conditions are quickly deteriorating.
0846 The PSNI are warning drivers of treacherous road conditions around Downpatrick and Castlewellan in Co Down and say visibility has been reduced on parts of the M1 motorway in both directions due to the weather conditions.

0830 The latest band of snow and sleet swept in from the North Atlantic shortly after 3am and has been affecting counties Donegal, Sligo, Mayo and Roscommon since then.
Driving conditions in Donegal have deteriorated rapidly with motorists experiencing particular difficulty getting through the Barnesmore Gap. Roads in Inishowen are also described as hazardous.
0820 There was little overnight snow around the northeast but road conditions remain dangerous due to icy conditions. All main roads are open but extreme caution is still advised, particularly on the N2 through the villages of Slane and Collon.
Snow began falling in Athlone at 7.30am and the roads have begun to deteriorate.
0815 According to www.kilkennyweather.com there was arecord low temperature for Kilkenny at 4am this morning of -12.0C.
The Luas Red Line is operating in both directions between Tallaght and Abbey Street. But the Green Line is only operating between Sandyford and Beechwood.
0812 Snow has been falling in Fermanagh and Tyrone this morning. The snow is moving eastwards and is expected to hit Belfast and county Antrim later this morning.

0804 Update from RTÉ News's North-West Correspondent Eileen Magnier:
Fresh snowfalls across the North West overnight have left some roads in the region, especially minor roads, in a dangerous condition.
Donegal County Council say up to six inches of snow fell in places since about 5am this morning and crews are out ploughing snow in some areas including the south west of the county in places like Glencolmcille and also in parts of Inishowen.
Up to 50 men are out working since early morning and Senior Engineer Michael McGarvey said the roads are holding up well but they are advising motorists to drive with care. He said temperatures are rising above zero this morning and there is a thaw in some places.
It is the same message to drive with care from Sligo County Council which also has crews out since 4.30am to clear the first significant flow to fall in the county since the weekend.
Many schools in Donegal remain closed and also a small number in rural parts of Sligo.The morning flight from Dublin to Sligo airport was cancelled this morning.
0801 Update from RTÉ News's South-East Correspondent Damien Tiernan:
Nearly all main roads in the South East are open and passable with care this morning.
There were no major overnight snowfalls in most of Wexford, Carlow, Kilkenny and Waterford which has made local authorities jobs somewhat easier in that road which were cleared of snow yesterday are still clear. There were fresh snowfalls in parts of Wicklow but not as bad as previous nights.
Salting of national roads in the region recommenced at 4am and is continuing this morning, but futher snowfalls are predicted for later today in some areas of the south east.
In Co Wicklow, the Dublin/Rosslare Bus Eireann service remains suspended, and on Route 133 between Dublin and Wicklow, the service is operating but not serving 'Leg of Mutton'.
0732 The M4, M7 and the M9 in Co Kildare are passable but with extreme care. Kildare County Council says avoid the outside lane especially on the M7 and just use the driving lane.
0730 Update from RTÉ News’s Southern Editor Paschal Sheehy:
Snow and sleet have begun to fall in parts of Kerry for the first time since Sunday. It's been snowing around Killarney and at Rathmnore and Gneeveguilla in east Kerry. In South Kerry gardaí at Caherciveen are dealing with an accident at Creamery Cross on the Waterville road, where an articulated lorry is blocking the main road. There have been two other minor accidents in the same area within the past hour and the roads there are very icy.
Elsewhere, it is beginning to snow around Macroom in Co Cork, where temperatures reached -7C overnight. The main roads and the county bounds have been well gritted, but secondary roads are still icy. Secondary roads countinue to be hazardous in the rest of the county too.
In Cork City, the city council's housing section has begun visiting 900 elderly council tenants and community wardens are liaising with the HSE and with community gardaí to ensure that the needs of elderly people are being met. The council's crisis management team will continue to meet over the weekend.

0648 Update from RTÉ News’s Western Editor Jim Fahy:
Driving conditions have deteriorated in parts of the west. Fresh snowfall overnight has affected roads in the Swinford/Claremorris area of east Mayo. Gardaí in Swinford say motorists driving on the N4 and N17 roads are likely to experience more difficult conditions this morning.
West Mayo had rainfall overnight and gardaí in Belmullet and Westport say the situation there is not as bad.
County Galway has had rain overnight but gardaí in the city say driving conditions are still difficult. Gardaí in Clifden say there are patches of black ice on the roads around Ballynahinch and Recess.

0615 Dublin Bus says it is providing as full a service as possible this morning. However road conditions are icy and the company is checking conditions on a number of routes.

0605 Dublin Airport is fully operational this morning. The Dublin Airport Authority says its snow and ice-clearing teams have been working overnight to ensure Dublin Airport is fully operational for flight operations.
It says there may be some disruption to the flight schedule following the closure of Dublin Airport yesterday evening and passengers are advised to consult their airline's website before travelling to the airport.
Disruption may occur should weather conditions deteriorate further.
Aer Lingus says it is experiencing continued disruption to its schedule due to the severe weather conditions. Customers are advised to check the status of their flight on the company website before departing for Dublin Airport.
Aer Lingus says it sincerely regrets the inconvenience this causes to customers and is doing everything possible to limit the effects of the disruption.
Iarnród Éireann says services are expected to continue operating throughout the network across Intercity, DART and Commuter routes. M3 Parkway Dunboyne services will operate to and from Connolly until further notice. Docklands Station is closed.
Services are subject to delays as points are cleared of snow and ice. More significant delays may occur where there is recent snowfall.
Customers are advised to allow extra travel time to arrive at stations due to poor road and footpath conditions.

Rain, sleet and snow along western counties will extend countywide this morning; turning to snow in many areas, with some significant accumulations likely. Heavy snowfall continuing to affect much of Leinster this afternoon, with sunny spells and a few showers following into the west and northwest, some wintry.
Frosty, icy conditions persisting on untreated surfaces, with some freezing fog in parts too. Temperatures will rise to between 4 and 7 degrees along Atlantic seaboards, but just -1 to 3 degrees generally. Winds will be mainly light to moderate southwesterly, fresher though near west and northwest fringes.
Scattered wintry showers moving eastwards across the country overnight with yet more snow accumulations. A sharp to severe frost and icy conditions will persist on untreated roads and pavements. Freezing fog in parts too, with just light variable breezes. Lowest temperatures will range 0 to -6 degrees.
Further scattered snow showers during Saturday, possible across any part of the country. Bitterly cold, with afternoon maxima of just 1 to 3 degrees generally, a little higher though near coastal margins. Winds will be mainly light northerly.
